project 2 - Mapping Sound (day 2)

28 September 2010, Tuesday
Our main idea is a comparing between Natural and Unnatural sound. In the world, we could easily huge different sounds. Some sounds is silent and soft, and some other sound is rough and high volume. The examples of soft sound is a bird and river, and the rough sound is a construction site and inside food court. In this exercise, we are going to determine and express a difference between natural sound and man-made sound.

The first class of this week, we discuss that what location we can record. There are hundreds of other places that we can easily record such as:
* Bus Station * Restaurant
* Train Station * Food Court
* Ferry * Car Parking
* Park * Elevator
* Bridge * Library
* Beach * Construction Site
*etc.

Once we decide what to do, talk to the Zoe to hire the sound recorder. This device is called Zoom H4n which detects and record any sound and noise. I'll never know that this device is so amazing. Once I plug into my ears, I can hear even tiny sound such as whispering. In addition, this device is so delicate. The same sound could hear differently when I put device to different location such as up or bottom, left or right.

When the sound device is fully recharged, we've been many different places outside of studio. We went and record in Albert Park, construction site, metalwork shop, bridge which connects between Albert Park and AUT, pedestrian cross, car parking, and bus station and so on. There so much different place we can record. After recording both natural and industrial sound, we came back to the studio and sort all the sound we've recorded. After that, we leave the rest for tomorrow.

Project 2 - Mapping Sound (day 1)

24 September 2010, Friday

We've started a new exercise called Sound Walk. In this exercise, we will be utilizing and developing the listening skills learnt at the end of last week. It will be recorded with using Zoom H4n digital recorder. First, we need to know about audio culture. The audio culture is a diverse group of art practices that considers wide notion of sound, listening, and hearing as its predominant focus. It has filtered into many everyday aspects of society such as TV, film and video games. Also it can be explored our everyday environment, from machine to weather.
From this exercise, we need to a team to work as group.

First, take a Zoom H4n recorder to certain location which needs to record. The location should be each different place and recorded each different time. Second, keep recording until the battery is run up. Whenever we record the sound long or short, we will use the program called audacity to edit a recorded sound and making a new sound up to 3 minutes. While the recording is process, be careful of any noises around the sound recorder. Because the recorder records everything include noise.

And then as I said above, we need to edit the sound and make it about 3 minutes long. Also have to make individual and group audio. We use audacity which very easy to edit and export to mp3 files.
Today, I decide to make a team:
* Robin Tey
* Daniel Lee(me)
* Versha Naidu
* Yoshin Naidoo
After making a team, we've decide research more about Mapping sound and audio culture. And think of how we going to record and edit it. And we decide to continue discuss on next Tuesday.

Semester 2 - experimental film 1

Experimental Film – International art festival

Hilary Harris – Organism (1929 – 1999)

the movie called ‘Organism’ is directed by Hilary Harris who was winner of Academic Award documentary filmmaker. The film which won the Academy Award is ‘Seawards the Great Ships’ shows in 1962. Also, Organism wins Academy Award and shot over 15 years. it shows that how people live in the city life with many different point of view. He pioneered and time-lapse film making technique to shot a unique experimental point of view.

The beginning of this story is the city around the world which usually take in rush hour. And it shots in New York city. This film show us a lot of things. It shows that people walking on pedestrian cross, driving vehicles, construct and deconstruct buildings and so on. Also, it shows sunset and sunrise in the city. After that, the scene is keep changing but the concept is same. After that, the film controls the speed up and down.

The soundtrack in this film is perfect match to the scene. This film doesn’t have speech at all. So, the music will changes as the scene change. if there is no music, it look like a random video with no meanings. However if the sound is enable, it change the viewer’s emotion.

After I end this film, I felt that ‘this is the perfect match of the project’. It shows different angles of camera to change the viewer’s feeling. The one we’ve looking something is not all. We can watch same thing in many different ways.

cinema Flaneur - Day 8 filming

11 August 2010, Wednesday

With the presentation of our research and theory over and done with it was time to really put our rig to the test through actual filming. So we did just that today. Walking around as a group and using our rig we each got a chance to use the rig to do portions of filming each. Because of our rig's design we had to go around the city locating suitable rails, curves and edges for the rig to ride. And by the day's end we got a reasonable amount of footage prepared for editing once the chance comes. after that, we've trying to find anywhere that has a pole which our design can ride it.

cinema Flaneur - Day 7 finish build

6 August 2010, Friday

me and Jack have finished our design. and all parts work great but the back wheel. if the design runs a lot, the wheel would be take it off by loosing the screw. so, I decide to use the washer and put right next to the wheel which helps to move a wheel smoothly and easily. without back wheel, our design runs perfectly.

Our design is too big and lots of material will be need. and then we've start to think disadvantage of our design. we have so much disadvantage such as, weight, unstable, lot of material and so on. therefore, we've decide do change our design.
