math and Art Practical - Day 3

Day 3. processing

First, I use magazines to make tree branches and ground.

Second, I use colored paper to make tree leaves and grass.

math and Art Practical - Day 2

Day 2. build the collage

After we have all the material, starting to think the shape to be make. there are many shapes that we can build it such as tree, flower, car, dog, bag, and so on. My design is make a shape as tree.

* first, we cut the paper in randomly shape. ( rectangle, parallelogram, triangle, etc)

* second, stick and paste it in the right position.

* thirdly, keep paste them until it becomes tree.

reminder: don't paste same paper in same location. It might look one paper paste it straightaway.

- the smaller you cut, a beautiful image will become.

Math and Art Practical - Day 1

Day 1. gathering all the material

My project is collage. the collage is one of the synthetic cubism which dismantle one piece into various geometrical shape and re-assemble randomly. the material I am going to use is:

* scissor
* glue
* A2 sized canvas
* magazines or other paper to be cut

Aural terrain - Live Performance

22 October 2010, Friday

So, today is a day we are going to perform in front of audience in art gallery building. The actual performance starts at 5pm so, we have a lot of time to discuss more about our project. Zoe said that we have to be in that building by 4 pm to set everything up. When the time passes 4:50pm, audiences start to come and join our performance. I am too nervous when I am performing in front of people but, I change my mind not to get nervous. We watched performance as Dylan is host of this audio performance. We had perform nearly last and we did it awesome. By end of performance, our teammates have smiling on their face and hopefully we get a high mark on this course. I would like have many thanks to my team members: Robin Tey, Yoshin Naidoo, Versha Naidu.

Aural terrain - Rehearsal

21 October 2010, Thursday

We have a rehearsal today at 12pm in the chroma key room. We are preparing everything but dress. We’ve keep think about costume but, no one care about it. When demonstrate it, there are not much people have dressed. Before prepare to perform, we check everything that where is the cord and devices. We demonstrate at second of last so our team had some time to discuss more.

Our team have a bit nervous but, we are well-perform. I believe we did it great and have good commutation devices. I am waiting for the real performance tomorrow with no nervous.

first, Robin start texting to our phone. after that, the signal from texting coming out to the big speaker. Yoshin press speech of the laptop to say robotic 'message received'. and then, me and Versha start the music loudly. I am a leader of whole music so I have to control the rhythm. while the music is perform, Yoshin keep speeches the laptop 'digital communication', 'technology' and so on. we slightly drop the volume after 3 minutes. then stops everything.

Aural terrain - Pitch In

19 October 2010, Tuesday

This is the last week of Aural Terrain. Last weekend, we've all researched what devices would be goods for communicating each other. Yoshin bring his laptop, Robin is preparing for the texting, Versha bring small speaker and her circuit board, and I bring turntable. We already pitch in to Zoe about our idea. Yoshin was trying to use his laptop for speeches robotic voice-over sound for the background of our project. When Versha's speaker plugged in, the electronic vibrating sound is comes out. Robin is keep texting our phones to ringing the message sound. And I scratch my LP with using turntable because the sound is too musical if I just play the turntable.

Zoe also agrees to use the turntable. Also, Yoshin use his laptop to make a 3-time beeping sound. this sound is comes out when the mobile phone is near to the speaker then receive any text or call from someone. Before choosing the turntable, we think to using typewriter. However, there are no place sell the typewriter. we booked a Chroma key room from 12-1pm. we only have one hour to practice it so we are rush to set all things up and start to practice. However, we had a less time so we choose to visit Yoshin's house and continue practice it. We discuss rhythm and other sound effect later.

math and art essay

0947214 - Daniel Lee

Math and art argumentative essay

In this essay, we will determine the cubism based on the math and art. The math and art have two separate cultures. However, we could identify the link connection between math and art. We could easily find the mathematical principles by through the use of pitches, scales, geometry, the golden ratio, Fibonacci number and so on. This essay will demonstrate relationship mathematics and art and share in order to find and add discoveries and fabrications.

Paintings of this century are usually readily identifiable as belonging to some art movement, or "school" such as Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism, and Action Painting. The movement, which comprises attitudes shared by artists in more or less organized contact with one another, as well as technical devices related to those attitudes, blends into or supersedes the stylistic heritage of a city or region; instead of "the Venetians" or "the Flemish School," our era presents practitioners of esthetic "ism".

First, we need to focus on is the analytic and synthetic cubism. The analytic phase was the earlier of the two occurring from 1908 to1912. In analytic cubism, artists restricted their use of color. They favored a more monochromatic style of painting. Gray, back, blue, and brown were some of the more common hues. Natural objects were analyzed by the artist and then reduced to basic geometric forms like spheres, cues, and cones. The one of the famous analytical cubism is Braque woman. This artwork is fully descripted with many different shapes such as book, woman, and guitar. And it only uses monochrome. It describes in the way of looking an object with different angle and then synthesize into one. However, it is hard to synthesize the broken forms into one single form. Especially, it gets even harder to represent emotional feeling of the object. In addition, the analytical cubism cannot draw one perfect form of shape when represent the one single form to overlooked in one direction.

The synthetic cubism is much more developed from an analytical cubism. The second major branch, synthetic cubism, was developed from 1912 to 1919. While analytic cubism broke down subject matter, synthetic cubism combined and layered the subject matter. Artists like Picasso also incorporated the collage into their artwork. Actual newspaper clippings were pasted on the canvas. Objects from the real world became art itself for the first time. Simple geometric shapes were used to a lesser extent than in analytic cubism. Unlike analytic cubism, the synthetic cubism creates a new picture which combines abstract structure and actual form. In other words, synthetic cubism is compromised analytical cubism while maintaining the form. After that, the small analytical forms are disappeared and create huge geometrical forms. So the synthetic cubism is easy to synthesize the broken forms into one single form. The most famous painting technique is the ‘papiers colle’. It is type of collage which paste piece of flat material such as paper, oilcloth, and newspaper. In addition, the flat material is different form of geometrical shape. This painting is easy to represent emotional feeling depends on the color and form of shape.

Many of Picasso's pictures may look strange. This is because Picasso showed many different views of a person or an object at the same time. He drew the front and the side of a face in the same picture. His artistic style is called cubism. In the early 20th century in Europe, many artists were turning away from traditional painting and were struggling to produce more innovative and unique works. For some of them, innovation itself was a goal. This trend greatly influenced Picasso, Picasso created a new art movement called cubism. Many critics and viewers often misunderstood early cubist paintings. However, the cubist movement in painting had a major influence on Western art and artists. The analytic and synthetic cubism is same art work. In other word, the analytic cubism is revolved to synthetic cubism. Both artworks are very similar to each other but, have different meaning. I think analytic cubism feels dark, puzzled, and lonely while synthetic cubism feels bright, harmonious, and meaningful.

The cubism and modern art are similar to each other. The modern art have various abstract artwork. The cubism is to prove how simplicity can still be used to great effect as opposed to complex structuring. When used to its fullest extent that style can surpass the elegance of even photo realistic portraits. He succeeded. The actual style is not what is important; it is the success of it. Other artists’ centuries before had made cubist works, even if they did not realize it. But the cubist movement is important because people saw it. The modern art and cubism does not tell the story

We could find similar point between cubism and abstract art. Abstract art is a more general term that encompasses, but is not limited to, Cubist art. Abstract art is really any art that is not directly and intentionally representational, or art which seeks to only loosely represent the object being painted. Abstract art is fine art that may or may not visually reference the real world but that may often not be identified as referencing anything at all. Its distinguishing characteristics are its lack of resemblance or lack of accurate resemblance to objects in real life. Abstract art does not define artistic credos or intentions. Abstract art covers a range of movements that all applied their own specific artistic values, methods and beliefs. For example, the Cubist painters were striving to emphasize the two-dimensionality of the canvas, rather than the three-dimensional quality of the objects they were painting.

In conclusion, the cubism was the best abstract artwork in 20th centuries. The Cubism breaks up objects and displays them rearranged at unnatural or impossible angles, displays multiple views of objects or flattens three-dimensional objects to a pointedly two-dimensional format. Cubism is fundamentally striving to present objects from reality in abstracted form. The analytical cubism more likely uses 3-D shape with restricted color (monochrome) while the synthetic cubism uses 2-d shape with various colors. Therefore, in my creative practice of collage will be demonstrate that how does the collage painting relate to abstract artwork. However, the artwork will perform limited amount of material (newspaper, magazine) to make audience not confuse.

Aural terrain - Developing Idea

14 October 2010, Thursday

Zoe refuses our ideas because the metal sheet is a real instrument. We have to make something is not instrument. So, we've decide to choose another idea called 'communication'. The 'communication' means that we are going to communicate with digital sound. And express each different types of electronic sound are communicate each other. Our initial idea was simple communicate with using circuit boards, mobile phone, and vocal with using microphone. The device is undeveloped but we want to tell audience that this is the communication between different electronic sounds. Yoshin and Robin are using the circuit board and I am vocal. And Versha is texting anybody and join the message sound into communication. However, our team needs to develop a lot.

Aural terrain - produce idea

13 October 2010, Wednesday

This is the last project about the sound and it has presentation/performance. In this project, I can work either alone or group but I decide the group. The group is easier and can help each other when one of my team is lost. So, this project was me, Robin They, Versha Naidu, and Yoshin Naidoo. First, we think any ideas to discuss. I give an idea called vibration on the metal sheet. It present the different pattern of flour depends on the tones of sounds. On the metal sheet, put the flour on it. And use violin stick to scratch the edge of sheet metal. If the tone is high, the patterns look different. And if the tone is low, other different patterns of flour would produce. We decide this idea for now and continue discuss tomorrow.

Circuit Binding - Final day

8 October 2010, Friday
This is the final day of circuit bending project, presentation. James put all students into group randomly and present with their circuit. My group is Charlotte, Brandon, and me. We’ve discussed who will be start first and how we present better. Because no one wants the sound is random and huge sound mixed each other with no ordering.

We discussed that Brandon start first, and charlotte and me catching up. After that, charlotte stops her circuit and help Brandon to make sound different. And I am continued to present my circuit but make a sound different when her circuit was stop.
At the end of the presentation, I felt that we can make music with these sound. Most music have so many instrument and trying to compare to sound better. The circuit board is much worse than actual music when compare it. However, even circuit board can make rhythm, tone, and music. Also, it will change people's emotion.

Circuit Binding - Day 3

7 October 2010, Thursday

Simon teaches a new circuit with using a prototype board. Unlike the bread board, the prototype board represents way different sound. As I said before, the bread board circuits will sounds as similar as the computer error sound. The prototype board can wave a sound. However, prototyping is hard to make it because we need to use the solder to build a circuit. I was trying to build the prototype circuit. However, once I finished it, it won't work. Therefore, I give up making a prototyping and going with a bread board. It has restricted sound but, works great. The group presentation is tomorrow so, I am going to prepare it and double check the circuit not to break it.

Circuit Binding - Day 2

6 October 2010, Wednesday

Today, I've finished building the bread board and readying for the testing. When the battery have installed, it work perfectly fine (thank god!). The sound is similar to the computer error sound when start up the computer. Also, the tone of the sound will high and low by changing the resistor. The sound amplifier is really strong and sounds only one tone. I think I have to develop more.

Circuit Binding - Day 1

5 October 2010, Tuesday

After the sound walk is finish, the next project is pops up. This time, we are actually building a circuit board to making a sound. A lecture named Simon Cummings was explained about circuit board and how does it make a sound. First, use the bread board to build the circuit. Simon gives us basic piece such as LED, resistor, and sound amplifier. But, need to go to the electronic shop called Surplustronic and buy other material: the bread board, prototype board, battery and so on. Simon already gives us the printout which drawing of a circuit we are going to build. Once I bought all the material, start to build my circuit. I hope the circuit working perfectly. I brought the circuit and build at home.

project 2 - Mapping Sound (day 3)

1 October 2010, Friday

Today we have to finish everything include ongoing document, blog, group and individual sound of music and burned Audio CD. We are starting to present on 12pm, so everything must finish before 12pm. I was finished my individual project already but need to do journal and blog. I and my team rushed to finish everything and prepare for the presentation. The presentation has started in the Chroma key room at 2pm. our team don't want to go at last so, we decide to present first.

Basically, our team project is to listen and think difference between natural and industrial sound. At the starting of the music, we put natural and industrial together to express the difference. After that, we bring up the both sounds one at a time. After 45 seconds passed, we changed to the natural sound and drop the volume slightly.

In my individual project is same meaning but way different of the team project. I start with bird sound and compare and mix the sound but only use natural sound. And I stopped the music and pause 2 second. Then, I start the industrial sound with starting up the vehicle's engine. The industrial sound and it reaches unto nearly end. At the end, I put the elevator with sounds 'Let's stopping ground floor'.

Once all presentation have finished, I upload the original sound we've used. Also, I visit the Aporee Website to upload original sound to actual place for requirement.
